Casa de la Puerta Grande is situated on the edge of its own dramatic gorge in the beautiful Lecrin Valley midway between the historic city of Granada (with its vibrant Moroccan quarter and the historic attractions of the Alhambra and the Generalife) and the Costa Tropical. Both are accessible within 30 minutes. Lanjaron, gateway to the mountainous Alpujarras (the highest villages in Spain) can be reached in about 20 minutes. In winter, skiing is available 45 minutes away at the Sierra Nevada ski resort.
The stunningly beautiful Lecrin Valley is is deal for relaxation and perfect for walkers, fishermen, bird watchers & artists. The epic GR7 walk from Gibraltar to Istanbul passes the door and one of the GR7 markers can be seen upon the wall. The lush valley just beyond the house is rich with oranges, almonds, grapes, figs, pomegranates, persimmons, and prickly pears. In the spring the air is perfumed with orange and almond blossom. The higher slopes of the gorge abound with olives and the scent of wild herbs. The Moors christened this place the Valley of Joy.
Casa de la Puerta Grande is a restored village house of great character in the spectacularly situated Moorish Village of Albunuelas - which overlooks the Rio Santo gorge and is reputed to be the most beautiful village in Granadas stunning Lecrin Valley. The house is on three levels with wonderful roof terrace views over the orange orchards and the gorge. While it has retained its chestnut beams, colourful local tiles and local character, the house is comfortably equipped with good quality items.
La Puerta Grande also has access to its own orange orchard which can be used in summer by tenants for picnics or splashing about in the paddling pool. In the right season the oranges (as many as you can eat) are free!
The fully equipped roof terrace is provided with sun recliners, table & chairs, BBQ, paddling pool and a shaded area for the hottest months. In the evening one can relax with a cold drink and enjoy the stunning views as the eagles soar over the gorge.
Can also be rented with Casa de la Lagartija, La Joya or Casa Idrisi. Contact us for details of accommodation in Granadas beautiful Lecrin Valley or the Sierra Nevada National Park.

Almost unrivalled for beauty and architectural splendour, the entire city of Granada has been declared a national monument. It lies at the foot of Spain´s mightiest massif, the Sierra Nevada. At the heart of the city, on its hill, rises the imposing Alhambra - one of the most brilliant jewels of universal architecture. Built under the Nasrid Dynasty in the 14th century, the Alhambra is a series of wonderful palaces, fountains and gardens.
On the opposing hill, facing the Alhambra is the old Moorish casbah called the Albaicin, a fascinating labyrinth of narrow streets and whitewashed houses with secluded inner gardens, known as "cármenes". The Plaza de San Nicolas, at the highest point of the Albaicin, is famous for its magnificent view of the Moorish palace.
Many of the citys beautiful squares, including Bib-Rambla & Campo del Principe were originally used for the Moorish lists – where noblemen jousted on their fine steeds. Later the Inquisition judged, and burned their victims at the stake here.
To the north of Bib-Rambla is a tightly-meshed grid of alleyways & shops, decorated with Moorish arches - the Alcaicería. This is a remnant of the Great Medieval Bazaar to which merchants once came from all over Islam and Christendom. It was famous for its silk, for Caesar had given the Moors an exclusive licence. In gratitude they called all such bazaars Al-Caicería, or "Caesars Place”.
